SEMO Launches Summer Bridge Program to Support Student Transition, Build Confidence

Southeast Missouri State University will launch a new Summer Bridge Program beginning summer 2026, designed to support incoming students through a structured academic and residential experience that builds community, confidence and early college momentum before the fall semester begins.

"As we think about student success, this program is really about meeting students where they are and helping them start strong," said Dr. Stephen Schultheis, vice president of enrollment management and student success at SEMO. "We're giving students the structure, support and confidence they need to feel ready for their first semester as Redhawks."

Students in the program will move into campus housing Sunday, July 12. Programming begins with Camp Redhawk July 13-16, a campus engagement experience open to incoming students, followed by orientation July 17.

Academic coursework will run July 20 through Aug. 13, during which students will earn six credit hours. A final celebration day is planned for Aug. 14, recognizing student achievement and completion of the program.

Between academic sessions, students will participate in workshops and engagement activities coordinated by SEMO's Educational Access Programs office. Programming will include guest speakers from campus and community partners, providing financial literacy sessions, campus resource connections and social activities designed to build peer relationships.

Lenell Hahn, executive director of enrollment strategy, said the program is intentionally structured to blend academic preparation with a strong sense of belonging.

"Students benefit when they're not navigating college alone from day one," Hahn said. "Through Camp Redhawk, shared coursework and ongoing support, they'll build relationships with peers, connect with faculty and staff who are invested in their success, and gain confidence in what college life looks like. We want them to start the semester already feeling like they belong here."

University leaders said the program reflects a broader commitment to student success and retention by providing wraparound support during a critical transition period.

Eligible students may use financial aid to help cover program costs, including federal Pell Grants. Students must complete the FAFSA for both the 2025-26 and 2026-27 academic years to be considered for financial aid eligibility, and limited scholarship support may also be available.
