Cybersecurity Tip of the Week – Public Charging Stations Aren’t Always Safe

Charging your phone while you're on the go may seem harmless, but not every USB charging station is created equal. Public charging ports found in airports, hotels, shopping centers, and other public places can pose a security risk if they've been tampered with. While uncommon, attackers can modify USB charging stations or cables to attempt to steal data or install malicious software; a technique sometimes referred to as "juice jacking." The safest option is to use your own wall charger plugged into a standard electrical outlet or carry a portable battery pack when traveling. If you must use a public charging station, consider using a USB data blocker, which allows power to pass through while preventing data from being transferred. A little preparation before you leave home can help keep both your device and your personal information secure wherever your travels take you.
