What is the Cost of Our Response

Ottawa, ON - Today, the Hon. Pierre Poilievre, Leader of His Majesty's Loyal Opposition and the Conservative Party of Canada; Melissa Lanstman, Deputy Leader of the Conservative Party of Canada; and Shuvaloy Majumdar, Conservative Shadow Minister for Canada-US Relations, sent the following letter to Prime Minister Mark Carney, calling on the government to release its analysis of the costs of counter-tariffs to Canadian households:

Dear Prime Minister,

President Trump imposed yet another round of illegal and unjustified tariffs on Canada. The damage is not abstract. Paycheques are missing. Jobs are gone. Livelihoods that took a generation to build now hang on a decision made in Washington.

Canada cannot accept a one-sided arrangement that deindustrializes our country. On that point Canadians are united. We support acting to defend the workers and industries in Washington's sights.

Leverage isn't the same as noise. A serious response puts maximum pressure on the United States and minimum pressure on Canadians. It targets goods that we can make ourselves or buy elsewhere. It does not tax our families for the privilege of appearing tough.

You have said it yourself: tariffs are "taxes which are ultimately paid by…consumers." You have now announced a return to dollar-for-dollar retaliation. Canadians are entitled to know what your tax will cost them.

Tariffs on food and hygiene products raise the price of a grocery cart. Appliances and electronics on your list are not made here - Canadians will pay more and have nowhere else to turn. The families with the least room in their budget will feel the most pain.

So the question is simple: How much more will a family of four pay because of these measures? And what will your government do to offset it?

Release the analysis. If your government has calculated what counter-tariffs cost Canadian households, publish the number. If it has not calculated it, say so.

Release the agreement you rejected, so Canadians can judge for themselves why their government walked away from the table.

And reconvene Parliament so we can introduce, debate and pass an Economic Action Plan that cuts taxes, creates jobs, unleashes growth and restores affordability to our country.

We will take the decisions to secure our country, but we cannot afford to hide the bill. Let us work together to deliver a Canada that is self-reliant, sovereign and stands on its own feet.
