WASHINGTON, DC-Today, two years after Hamas carried out a terror attack on Israel that killed more than 1,200 people and led to more than 250 people taken hostage, U.S. Senator Jack Reed (D-RI), the Ranking Member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, issued the following statement:
"Today marks two years since the horrific terror attacks on Israel on October 7, 2023, when Hamas brutally murdered and kidnapped innocent men, women, and children. I remember the victims, stand with the survivors, and reaffirm our unwavering support for Israel's right to exist in peace and security.
"We must also confront the immense suffering that this conflict has brought to the people of Gaza - families who deserve safety, dignity, and hope for a better future. I urge both Israel and Hamas to accept the terms of the current proposal to bring an end to this devastating war.
"Peace will not come easily, but it must come. A lasting ceasefire, the release of all hostages, a surge in humanitarian assistance, and a credible path toward Palestinian-led security and governance are the only way forward. The people of Israel and Gaza alike deserve a future defined by peace."
