WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Ranking Member of the Senate Judiciary Immigration Subcommittee, joined Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Senator Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), and Representative Maxwell Frost (D-Fla.-10), along with leading immigration advocates and interfaith leaders, to hold a rally and vigil to condemn the Trump Administration's abuses against American communities and to demand Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) leave Minnesota and cities across the nation. Groups including Indivisible, MoveOn Civic Action, Public Citizen, Movimiento Migrante DC, ACLU, Interfaith Alliance, and Free DC rallied outside of CBP headquarters alongside the lawmakers.
Starting with Los Angeles, ICE and CBP have conducted indiscriminate immigration enforcement in cities across the country to enable Trump's mass deportation campaign. Today's rally came in response to the killing of Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old wife and mother of three, the escalation of ICE and CBP violence, and the months-long pattern of unchecked violence and abuse in American communities. Public outrage over ICE and CBP's unaccountable actions continues to swell, resulting in more than 1,000 peaceful, nonviolent protests in the days since an ICE agent killed Good.
"Los Angeles was Donald Trump's test case for the relentless overreach of ICE and CBP that has been unleashed on our streets, in our schools, and in our neighborhoods. Now, in Minneapolis - a community all too familiar with violence perpetrated by those who have sworn to uphold the law - we saw an ICE agent inexcusably shoot and kill Renee Nicole Good, a U.S. citizen and a mother who was observing immigration enforcement in her community," said Senator Padilla. "How many more lives lost before we see real accountability? It's time to end the terror in our communities, stop the shattering of families, and cease the takeover of American streets by masked federal agents. It's time to get ICE and CBP out."
Senator Padilla has been a leading voice in opposition to President Trump's cruel and indiscriminate mass deportation agenda, including against his unprecedented, illegal militarization of Los Angeles and other American cities. Last June, Padilla led the entire Senate Democratic Caucus in demanding that President Trump immediately withdraw all military forces from Los Angeles and cease all threats to deploy the National Guard or active-duty servicemembers to American cities. In July, Padilla and Senator Cory Booker (D-N.J.) introduced the VISIBLE Act to require immigration enforcement officers to display clearly visible identification during public-facing enforcement actions. Last month, Padilla and Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) introduced the Accountability for Federal Law Enforcement Act to allow individuals - regardless of citizenship - the right to sue federal law enforcement officers and agencies in civil court for violations of their civil and constitutional rights.
