Warren, Leading Senate Democrats Request Records from FHFA Director Pulte on Potential Abuses of Power Against President Trump's Political Opponents
"Yet since taking office, instead of prioritizing housing affordability, you have abused your power and authority as FHFA Director to engage in what can only be described as a politically motivated public campaign to attack President Trump's perceived adversaries."

Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Ranking Member of the Senate Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee, and leading Senate Democrats are requesting information from Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte on his office's role in purported mortgage fraud investigations into New York Attorney General Letitia James, sitting U.S. Senator Adam Schiff, and Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook, given concerns about potentialabuses of power against President Donald Trump's perceived political opponents. Along with Warren, Senators requesting this information include Ranking Members Richard Durbin (D-IL), Senate Judiciary Committee, Ron Wyden (D-OR), Senate Finance Committee, Gary Peters (D-MI), Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee (HSGAC), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), HSGAC Subcommittee on Investigations, and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.
"As the Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), you have a critical role to play in lowering housing costs for the American people," wrote the Ranking Members. "Yet since taking office, instead of prioritizing housing affordability, you have abused your power and authority as FHFA Director to engage in what can only be described as a politically motivated public campaign to attack President Trump's perceived adversaries."
The Senators continued: "You have suggested that your focus on the unproven allegations of mortgage fraud against officials such as Attorney General James, Senator Schiff, and Governor Cook represents an apolitical effort to protect the housing market. But your statements and actions suggest it is instead a pattern of abuse of your power and authority as FHFA Director to help target and harass individuals perceived as political opponents of President Trump."
The Senators noted that Director Pulte had not launched similar investigations into Republican officials allegedly committing mortgage fraud: "In one recent interview, when pressed on whether or not you planned to investigate the alleged mortgage fraud of Ken Paxton, a Republican and the Attorney General of Texas, you refused to comment. It is also unclear whether you have engaged in any effort to investigate Trump Administration cabinet members-Labor Secretary Lori Chavez-DeRemer, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin, and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent-for alleged mortgage fraud after public reporting revealed that all may have engaged in activities similar to those you have accused Democratic officials of."
The Senators concluded by requesting information, documents, and communications related to Pulte's investigations into alleged mortgage fraud by October 8, 2025.
