In Seoul, Mexico and South Korea Follow Up on 2026-2030 Plan of Action

Foreign Secretary Roberto Velasco Álvarez held a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea, Cho Hyun, during his official visit to the country.

Both officials welcomed the fact that South Korean President Lee Jae Myung accepted President Claudia Sheinbaum's invitation to visit Mexico. They also discussed ways to advance the Mexico-South Korea 2026-2030 Plan of Action, which will be signed when the two leaders meet in Mexico City.

At the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Minister Cho told the Mexican delegation that South Korea intends to establish a cultural center in Mexico. The two delegations also discussed the benefits a Mexico-South Korea scholarship program would bring to both peoples.

Foreign Secretary Velasco also highlighted economic exchange with South Korea as one of the pillars of the relationship, noting that it is Mexico's fifth-largest trading partner and that bilateral trade reached $29.7 billion in 2025 alone.

"South Korea and Mexico have identified innovation, artificial intelligence, digital governance, and the aerospace sector as priority areas, where the opportunity lies not simply in exchanging knowledge, but in creating it together," he said.

On the multilateral front, the two officials reaffirmed their commitment to continued cooperation as members of MIKTA, as well as in forums such as APEC, the G20, and the United Nations.

Finally, they agreed that the upcoming visit by the South Korean president to Mexico will offer an opportunity to build on the relationship's current momentum and open a new chapter that brings lasting achievements for both peoples.
