The State University of New York at Stony Brook has announced the launch of Stony Brook Research Connect,a comprehensive online portal designed to spotlight the depth, scale, and impact of the university's research enterprise and make it easier for collaborators to connect with Stony Brook experts.
Powered by Elsevier's Pure platform, Stony Brook Research Connect provides public access to more than 2,200 faculty profiles representing researchers from Stony Brook University and Stony Brook Medicine, along with over 100,000 grants, projects, publications, and other scholarly works. The platform serves as a centralized gateway to discover Stony Brook researchers, explore their expertise, and identify opportunities for partnership across disciplines.
Eden Figueroa, endowed presidential professor of physics in the Department of Physics and Astronomy, is one of the many Stony Brook University researchers included in Stony Brook Research Connect.Stony Brook Research Connect enables scholars, industry partners, government agencies, media, students, and the public to explore the people and projects driving discovery at Stony Brook. Users can search by research area, academic unit, or keyword, and view detailed profiles that include publications, funded awards, honors, and collaborative activities.
Stony Brook Research Connect was created in partnership with SUNY Research Connect, a State University of New York Digital Transformation Project, announced by SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr. The statewide platform reinforces New York's commitment to advancing research excellence and accelerating innovation across public higher education. As part of that system-wide effort, Stony Brook Research Connect highlights Stony Brook's leadership in areas central to New York's economic and innovation priorities, including artificial intelligence, biotechnology, microelectronics and semiconductors, cancer research, and quantum information science.
Stony Brook University President Andrea Goldsmith"Stony Brook Research Connect represents a significant step forward in how we present and amplify the extraordinary work of our faculty," said Andrea Goldsmith, president of the State University of New York at Stony Brook. "Stony Brook researchers are advancing solutions to some of the world's most complex challenges. SUNY Research Connect gives the public and our academic and industry partners a powerful new tool to easily find the expertise and discoveries emerging from Stony Brook and across the SUNY system. This tool enhances the impact of our research to benefit our great state by catalyzing new collaborations, partnerships, and technology transfer."
The launch aligns with Governor Kathy Hochul's broader investments in SUNY research infrastructure, including the establishment of the Quantum Research and Innovation Hubat Stony Brook and other major capital initiatives across the state. By providing greater visibility into research strengths and infrastructure, SBU Research Connect supports collaboration that advances discovery, workforce development, and technology transfer.
Stony Brook University Interim Vice President of Research and Innovation Mónica BugalloMónica Bugallo, Interim Vice President of Research and Innovation at Stony Brook University, emphasized the broader public value of the new platform. "Public research universities have a responsibility to ensure that the knowledge we create is visible, understandable, and accessible to the communities we impact and serve," Bugallo said. "SBU Research Connect offers a clear view of the depth, reach, and strengths of research at Stony Brook. It makes it easy to identify areas of expertise, see how our scholars are connected across disciplines, and understand the impact of their work. By increasing awareness and access, we create new opportunities for collaboration and ensure that our research is positioned to serve society in meaningful ways."
The platform reflects the breadth and scale of Stony Brook's research enterprise, which spans 12 schools and colleges and engages thousands of faculty, students, and collaborators across disciplines. Each year, Stony Brook students participate in more than 1,800 research opportunities, faculty lead 259 clinical trials, and the university has secured more than 2,000 patents. Stony Brook's Renaissance School of Medicine is ranked No. 1 in NIH funding among public medical schools in New York State.
Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs Carl W. LejuezCarl W. Lejuez, Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, said: "So many of the inventions that have made life better for billions of people around the world come from colleges and universities, as do the books, pieces of art and scholarship that add to our understanding of different cultures and societies. Stony Brook researchers and scholars every day are working to ask and answer questions that will foster more innovations and share new ideas and perspectives. I am proud to see more of their work made accessible to the public, including to potential students and research collaborators, and am grateful to the State University of New York for creating this platform to connect researchers and scholars around the state and beyond."
Lav Varshney, Della Pietra Infinity Professor and director of the AI Innovation InstituteThe platform elevates individual researcher profiles that exemplify these strengths, including Stony Brook University President Andrea Goldsmith, whose work in information theory and wireless communications has shaped modern connectivity. Featured profiles also include Eden Figueroa, the architect of the nation's largest quantum network; Lav Varshney, whose research advances artificial intelligence and machine learning; Michael Dudley, a leading expert in materials science and semiconductor research; Alison Stopeck, a nationally recognized medical oncologist; Donghui Zhu, whose work in biomedical engineering bridges engineering innovation and human health; Andrew Flescher, who explores medical ethics particularly around organ donations; Simone Brioni, whose work explores the cultural history of Europe and Italy; and Nancy Tomes, who studies U.S. social and cultural history through health and medicine.
Alison Stopeck, MD, professor of medical oncology and associate director of clinical and translational research at Stony Brook Cancer CenterBy bringing these and thousands of other profiles together in one public portal, SBU Research Connect demonstrates both the depth of individual achievement and the collective strength of Stony Brook's research enterprise.
With its launch, SBU Research Connect strengthens Stony Brook's ability to tell the story of its research impact while creating new pathways for interdisciplinary collaboration and external engagement.
