Trusty steeds help promote anti-social behaviour awareness

The Council has been linking with Coventry Police this week to highlight the work they are doing to tackle anti-social behaviour in the city centre including action on the dangerous use of e-bikes.

Officers were also joined by two working Police horses that proved a hit with city centre shoppers and visitors on Tuesday this week.

In the city centre, neighbourhood teams were joined by the Police Mounted Unit, BID officers, and members from the Offender to Recovery programme, for retail crime patrols and engagement.

Councillor John McNicholas, who is the Council's Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Cohesion, was also out with officers to discuss some of the key safety issues that are being addressed in the city centre.

He said: "It is great to see the two working horses back in the city after more than 25 years. They help to build trust and confidence which is a really important message to get across.

"I was impressed by what I heard from officers but know that lots needs to be done to reassure residents.

"While I was in the city centre I made a point of thanking one e-bike user who was pushing their bike through the city centre and I also listened to the experiences of a man who had received support from the offender to rehab programme, who was shoplifting in the city centre, daily to support his drug habit.

"Now, with the support of the system, he has been able to kick his habit and giving his time to support others."

"Joint Police and Council partnership work alongside that of other agencies is vital in combating criminal behaviour."

Elsewhere a joint operation on Tuesday led by the Police saw 38 arrests, 18 stop and searches and 23 vehicle seizures as well as dozens of positive engagements with the public.

The Police, off-road bike team, and road harm prevention team, patrolled the city centre and then headed to the Stoke, Wyken, Henley, Longford, and Foleshill. The team seized eight vehicles for various offences including no insurance and no tax.

Officers from Safer Travel were at Pool Meadow bus station to deliver a knife arch operation.

Teams linked with local businesses to provide crime prevention advice and patrolled hot spot areas looking for prolific offenders.
