President Gitanas NausÄ—da joined the leaders of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Italy in welcoming the memorandum of understanding between the United States and Iran.
In their statement, the leaders congratulated the United States, the Iranian government, and all those involved, including Pakistan, Qatar, and other mediators, on this diplomatic breakthrough.
The statement notes that this is a moment of opportunity to restore stability in the Middle East and stabilize the global economy.
The European leaders stressed that the urgent reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, with unconditional and unrestricted freedom of navigation, is essential. They also expressed their readiness to contribute to this effort through a defensive mission to reassure commercial shipping and conduct mine-clearance operations.
The leaders emphasized in their statement that Iran must never acquire a nuclear weapon and expressed their readiness to work with the United States, Iran, and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to this end.
