San Mateo County ― Caltrans is working to minimize the impact of construction activities that have contributed to traffic on State Route 1 (SR-1) between Moss Beach and Half Moon Bay. Traffic signal lights at the intersections of SR-1 and Capistrano, Coronado, and Russeau Francais have been set to scheduled timing because the traffic detector loops under the pavement are inoperable during this phase of the project. The timing is being actively monitored and adjusted to alleviate traffic back-ups to the extent possible. All other intersections have fully operational detector loops.
In addition, Caltrans will halt nighttime construction work on Friday, May 22 and no work will be performed during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.
All pedestrian push buttons within the project limits are currently operational and will be repaired quickly if any should sustain damage.
Work will continue through North Main Street starting on Tuesday, May 26, and then move to State Route 92, Kelly Ave, and Poplar Ave.
Caltrans thanks residents, motorists, and all users of this highly traveled corridor for their patience and understanding. This project will bring a smoother ride, improved mobility, enhanced evacuation readiness, and a longer service life that will reduce the need for future maintenance operations.
Known as the SR-1 Multi-Asset Roadway Rehabilitation Project, the $46.7M project encompasses upgrading assets (such as pavement, guardrails, curbs, and crosswalks) that are nearing the end their service lives. Assets will be brought up to ADA standards, and Class II bike lanes will be added to both the north- and south-bound sides of the roadway. The project will continue through the summer of 2027. To learn more, visit the project website.
This work is funded by the State Highway Operation and Protection Program (SHOPP). SHOPP is the State Highway System's "fix-it-first" program that funds the repair and preservation on the state's highway system.
All work is weather dependent. Please drive with caution. Thank you for your patience as we work to maintain our state's highways, bridges, and tunnels.
