Expanded Police Unit to Strengthen Partnerships in Downtown Joliet

JOLIET, Ill. - As downtown Joliet continues to grow as a destination for residents, businesses, and visitors, the City of Joliet is expanding the Joliet Police Department's Special Services Unit to strengthen community engagement, address quality-of-life concerns, and support a welcoming downtown environment.

The expanded unit consists of six officers and one sergeant who will work closely with residents, business owners, property owners, community organizations, and city staff to identify concerns, solve problems, and build positive relationships throughout the downtown area.

The Special Services Unit complements existing downtown patrol operations while providing a dedicated focus on outreach, visibility, and problem-solving. Officers will maintain a consistent presence downtown, including in and around City Square, where they will engage with the public and work collaboratively to address concerns as they arise.

"Our goal is to build strong relationships with the people who live, work, and invest in downtown Joliet," said Sergeant Patrick Schumacher, who leads the Special Services Unit. "When officers are engaged with the community and working alongside residents and business owners to address concerns, we can help create a welcoming environment that supports continued growth, activity, and pride in our downtown."

The expansion reflects the City's broader commitment to supporting a vibrant downtown through strategic investments, community partnerships, and responsive public services.

"Downtown Joliet is experiencing renewed energy and activity, from the new City Square to community events and public gatherings," said Mayor Terry D'Arcy. "As more people spend time downtown, it's important that we continue creating an environment where residents, visitors, and business owners feel safe, comfortable, and connected to their community."

Residents and visitors are encouraged to enjoy downtown events and programming. To view the summer's full lineup of events, please visit www.joliet.gov/citysquare.
