Senator Declan O'Scanlon (R-Monmouth) is calling on the Sherrill Administration to suspend voter registrations at the NJMVC and for investigators to look beyond 2023 to check the last ten years of registrations after more than 6,000 non-citizens were automatically registered to vote when applying for a driver's license in 2023 and 2024.
New Jersey Globe reported that hundreds of these non-citizens voted in elections.
"Despite assurances from the Murphy Administration and Trenton Democrats that this could never happen, it happened, and it's worse than anyone expected. If we know that more than 6,000 non-citizens were improperly registered to vote over two years, why on earth would we stop the investigation there? This system has been in place for years. We should be reviewing every registration processed through the MVC over the last decade. If the system was broken in 2023 and 2024, New Jerseyans deserve to know whether it was broken in any other year up until present day. Until that thorough investigation is complete, the MVC should suspend all voter registrations.
"It is a shocking and outrageous revelation that it's not only possible, but actually happened, that our Motor Vehicle Commission software AUTOMATICALLY registered people to vote who are constitutionally ineligible to register or vote! Republicans have raised concerns about the MVC systems for years. Each time we were reassured that this "could never happen." Ooops!
"What's equally troubling is that these are only the cases where non-citizens correctly indicated that they were not citizens and were still registered anyway. That should alarm everyone. If the system failed when applicants answered honestly, what safeguards exist to prevent non-citizens from mistakenly checking the wrong box or knowingly claiming citizenship and being registered to vote.
"And let's discuss the victims here, other than in the integrity of our voter rolls. Those folks who were automatically registered, many of them not aware of the laws and rules of our system, received sample ballots….inviting them to vote and to commit a federal crime! Essentially the government telling them they are eligible. The ramifications are mind boggling.
"When Trenton Democrats made it law for non-citizens to obtain driver's licenses, Republicans warned that this very problem could occur. There is no better time than now to enact voter identification requirements to provide one more layer of protection to ensure only eligible voters are casting ballots."
