Defence Secretary Witnesses First Flight of Modernized Kfir Fighter Aircraft

Secretary to the Ministry of Defence, Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd), attended as the Chief Guest at the successful first flight of the Sri Lanka Air Force's modernized Kfir C12 fighter aircraft held at SLAF Base Katunayake today (11 June).

The Defence Secretary was received by the Air Force Commander, Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe on his arrival at the venue.

The event marks a significant milestone in the Government's ongoing efforts, under the guidance of the President, to modernize the nation's air combat capability and strengthen the national security framework. It signified the successful completion of a comprehensive modernization programme undertaken in partnership with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), which has upgraded the Sri Lanka Air Force's existing Kfir fleet with advanced avionics, mission systems and structural enhancements designed to significantly extend the aircraft's operational lifespan and combat effectiveness. It is also aims to ensure that the nation's defence forces remain capable of responding effectively to evolving security challenges while safeguarding Sri Lanka's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The successful modernization of the Sri Lanka Air Force's Kfir fleet marks an important milestone in enhancing the operational readiness and air defence capabilities of the nation. This achievement reflects the strong cooperation between the Sri Lanka Air Force and Israel Aerospace Industries. The upgraded aircraft will contribute significantly to safeguarding Sri Lanka's sovereignty and national security while ensuring enhanced effectiveness in meeting present and future operational requirements.

The Kfir modernization programme covers the upgrading of Kfir fighter aircraft and trainer aircraft to the advanced Kfir C12 standard. The enhancements include a modern glass cockpit configuration, improved navigation and communication systems, advanced mission planning capabilities and precision weapon employment systems, providing greater situational awareness and operational effectiveness. The Kfir has been a key component of the nation's air defence capability since entering service in 1996. The upgraded Kfir C12 platform will offer enhanced air-to-air and air-to-ground capabilities, transforming the fleet into a more versatile multirole combat asset capable of addressing contemporary and future operational requirements.
