The Grand Prairie City Council honored the legacy of former Councilmember D. Lee Alcorn at its bimonthly meeting Tuesday, August 18 at City Hall.
Alcorn passed away in July at the age of 89, following decades of service and advocacy in Grand Prairie and across North Texas.
A proclamation presented to his family ahead of the meeting designated August 18, 2026 as D. Lee Alcorn Day in Grand Prairie.

Mr. Alcorn devoted himself to strengthening the community through his service as founder and president of the Grand Prairie Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), as a member of the Grand Prairie City Council, and as founding member of the Coalition for the Advancement of Civil Rights, through his advocacy for fairness, civic engagement, and opportunity for all residents.

Mr. Alcorn proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and with the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. He dedicated his professional career to healthcare, and made Grand Prairie his home for nearly five decades while building a loving family with wife, Rhonda, their five children, 12 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Through his leadership and commitment to equality, Alcorn became one of Grand Prairie's most recognizable voices for racial justice.
