MMSD Green Luminary® Award | Milwaukee Montessori School

Removing over an acre of impervious asphalt and replacing it with a combination of porous pavers, rain gardens, native landscaping, and stormwater trees has dramatically transformed the parking lot at Milwaukee Montessori School. Together, these green infrastructure types can manage up to nearly 160,000 gallons of stormwater each time it rains.

Milwaukee Montessori School, the second oldest Montessori school in the nation, has a mission of educating youngsters to become an informed, committed, and difference-making generation. The onsite green infrastructure ties into the mission nicely by helping students understand the beneficial role the renovated parking lot plays in helping to improve the environment.
