Dead Men Do Tell Tales: Captain Jim Stinchcomb’s Story

Fort Oglethorpe, GA: On Sunday, June 16, at 11 am, Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park will provide a 45-minute presentation discussing the story of 17th Ohio Infantry Captain Jim Stinchcomb during the Battle of Chickamauga. Stinchcomb was a lively correspondent to his hometown newspaper, and this program will look at his reported experiences during the battle. Participants will meet at the Chickamauga Battlefield Visitor Center before traveling onto the battlefield for the talk.

Jim Stinchcomb was from Lancaster, Ohio, where he was an attorney and a fierce war democrat. He seemed to be fighting two wars in 1863, one on the battlefield and the other in the court of public opinion as he lashed out, from afar, at his own party as the 1863 mid-term elections approached. Through it all, he kept up a steady correspondence back to Ohio and gave some graphic descriptions of what the men in the field were going through daily.

Please dress accordingly for the weather, bringing water is encouraged, and folding chairs are welcome.
