"Climate change is a reality that affects us all and must be tackled by placing the human person at the centre of every action to protect nature". With these words, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Antonio Tajani addressed the Climate Summit currently under way in Belém, Brazil, speaking on behalf of the Italian Government and on the delegation of the Prime Minister
Just days before the opening of COP30, Minister Tajani reaffirmed Italy's position - which also played a decisive role in the agreement recently reached in Brussels by EU Environment Ministers - advocating an approach based on rationality and balance. "There can be no fight against climate change without taking into account its social dimension," Minister Tajani stated, calling for the abandonment of ideological approaches that impose unsustainable and unattainable targets, which risk damaging Europe's economic, industrial and social systems.
The Minister reiterated Italy's commitment to the energy transition, noting that renewable sources now account for 50% of national electricity production. In this regard, he underlined the importance of making use of all available technologies. Together with Brazil and Japan, Italy has launched an initiative on biofuels, aimed at quadrupling the production of sustainable fuels by 2035.
Across all key sectors for environmental protection - agriculture, water, health and technology - Italy stands ready to share its expertise and best practices. Minister Tajani also highlighted Italy's major initiatives aligned with the goals of the Paris Agreement, which marks its tenth anniversary this year. In particular, he recalled the Italian Climate Fund, through which over EUR 4 billion are being channelled, with a special focus on projects in Africa.
In conclusion, Minister Tajani recalled that this year marks 800 years since the birth of Saint Francis of Assisi, stressing that the shared endeavour to combat climate change draws inspiration from his message of love for nature, humanity and all of Creation, of which we are all a part.
