Niagara University Students Attend Opening Weekend of Toronto International Film Festival

Niagara University students in CMS 360: Film Festivals traveled to Toronto Sept. 5-7 for the opening weekend of the Toronto International Film Festival. The trip aimed to enrich their appreciation of film and culture while building inspiration ahead of curating their own on-campus festival this fall.

Students attended films such as "Christy," a biopic about trailblazing boxer Christy Martin starring Sydney Sweeney; "Charlie Harper," a nonlinear romance starring Nick Robinson ("Jurassic World") and Emilia Jones ("CODA"); and "Good Boy," a thriller about a troubled teen forced into rehabilitation by a seemingly good-natured couple. They also caught red-carpet moments with the stars of "Knives Out 3: Wake Up Dead Man," including Daniel Craig, Josh O'Connor, and Kerry Washington, as well as James McAvoy, who premiered his directorial debut "California Schemin'."

Founded in 1976, TIFF is one of the world's leading film festivals, attracting thousands of filmmakers, critics, and fans each year.

The trip was designed to inspire students as they prepare for their own three-week on-campus film series, scheduled for Nov. 6, 13, and 20. Attendees can expect interactive elements, creative engagement, giveaways, and a lively festival atmosphere that brings the campus community together.

"Going to TIFF gave our students a front-row look at how film festivals really work," said Dr. Joseph Sirianni, the course instructor. "They were so excited to see films before anyone else, loved the energy of the crowds, and really embraced the celebrity Q&A sessions. The experience has definitely fueled their excitement for bringing their own film fest to campus."

Students will begin promoting the festival at the end of September, unveiling a special theme and inviting the campus community to join what they hope will become a new Niagara tradition celebrating film and culture.
