On 22 April, during a working visit to Luxembourg, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Kęstutis Budrys visited the European Court of Auditors (ECA) and the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU).
The head of Lithuania's diplomacy met with Tony Murphy, President of the European Court of Auditors, and members of the ECA. The Minister also held a meeting with Laima Liucija Andrikiene, a member of the ECA delegated by Lithuania, as well as Lithuanians serving in this EU institution.
During the meetings, the Minister presented the priorities of Lithuania's Presidency of the Council of the EU and stressed the role of the Presidency in responding to the expectations and needs of European citizens.
"A strong, united and secure Europe, capable of responding effectively to global challenges, is in the common interest of all Europeans. Lithuania's Presidency of the Council of the EU will be an important opportunity to contribute to long-term solutions for the safety and well-being of the people of Europe. We also see a strong Ukraine integrated into the EU as an integral pillar of the future European security architecture," said Budrys.
The Minister expressed support for the activities of the ECA, emphasizing the importance of independent, high-quality, and impactful audits in enhancing the implementation of EU policies, promoting accountability, transparency, and sound financial management, thereby strengthening the trust of European citizens and helping to address current and future EU challenges.
The ECA is one of the seven main EU institutions. It audits the EU revenue and expenditure to ensure that EU funds are properly collected, used rationally, and accounted for in a transparent manner.
The Minister also met in Luxembourg with the President of the Court of Justice of the European Union, Koen Lenaerts, and Lithuanian representatives at the Court, Judge Danutė Jočienė and Advocate General Rimvydas Norkus.

Budrys thanked the management and judges of the CJ for a consistent and uninterrupted fulfilment of the mission entrusted to them by the EU Treaties, namely the protection of justice, the rule of law, and the principle pacta sunt servanda (agreements must be kept), despite the difficult geopolitical situation in the world. By addressing complex legal issues, the CJ defends the fundamental values of the EU and contributes to a coherent, unified European legal framework.
