Cameron University will display more than 7,000 American flags across its Lawton campus as a lead-up to its annual observance of Veterans Day. The flags will be in place from Monday, Nov. 2, through Thursday, Nov. 12, as visible recognition of the patriotism and dedication of those who served in the Armed Forces.
The display of flags has developed into a special tradition for both the university family and broader community. Cameron students, employees and community volunteers spend hours placing the thousands of flags on campus grounds in preparation for the observance, and will return 10 days later to retrieve them.
The flags will be on display during CU's annual Veterans Day ceremony, which begins at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, in Veterans Grove north of Howell Hall. Cameron invites everyone - especially veterans - to attend the ceremony that afternoon and take a moment to walk among the breathtaking display of flags that pay homage to the sacrifice and service of America's military.
Cameron's tradition of displaying American flags on Veterans Day began in 2011 as part of the Remembrance Roll Call, a national initiative on college and university campuses. Originally, each flag commemorated a service member whose life was lost during conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Even though the Remembrance Roll Call initiative ended, Cameron has continued to display the flags each November in honor of all veterans.
