ICEYE: Unlocking the New Frontier of Space Intelligence

Flying blind

Every day, governments and corporations make critical decisions that require detailed, real-time understanding of what is happening across vast expanses of land and sea (e.g., ensuring national security, responding to natural disasters, detecting dark ships, monitoring infrastructure integrity, or tracking illegal deforestation). In many such instances, ground or airborne measurement is expensive, slow, dangerous, and/or impossible; therefore, customers are increasingly turning to space-based imaging.

And yet, historically, space-based solutions have been fundamentally limited. Optical satellites are rendered blind by darkness, cloud cover, and adverse weather (e.g., smoke, mist), and hence can't be relied on for around-the-clock or time-sensitive use cases. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) technology leverages radar to "see" through these conditions, but legacy SAR satellites are large, bespoke machines that each cost hundreds of millions of dollars and take years to build. As a result, they mostly fly as one-offs or in small fleets, and are therefore limited to providing only occasional snapshots (low revisit rates).

That is why we are thrilled to announce our investment in ICEYE, a leading provider of sovereign intelligence from space, redefining what's possible in the category.

Reimagining space intelligence from the ground up

ICEYE was founded in Espoo, Finland, by engineers Rafal Modrzewski and Pekka Laurila. Its original innovation was the miniaturization of SAR technology: it delivers state-of-the-art SAR satellites at an order-of-magnitude lower cost than peers and within months rather than years. This makes larger constellations economically viable, which, in turn, provides the high revisit rates necessary for continual monitoring. To date, ICEYE has built and launched more than 70 SAR satellites, making it one of the most experienced vendors in the market and the first to have a scaled commercial constellation.

A key tenet of ICEYE's model has been its investment in vertical integration and in building a robust and scalable global supply chain. ICEYE designs, engineers, assembles, tests, and operates its own satellites with most sub-systems built in-house.

ICEYE has also invested heavily in proprietary data, software, and analytics capabilities, and is making industry-pioneering advances in AI to drive quicker and more accurate insights across modalities at scale. The result is the leading end-to-end space intelligence offering on the market today, across Mission sales, data feeds, AI-enabled analytics solutions, and ground infrastructure.

A sovereign, multi-modal future

Historically, the prohibitive costs have made space-based intelligence the domain of a few superpowers, leaving allied nations dependent on shared intelligence at best. ICEYE's innovation, cost structure, and breadth of offering are changing that calculus, with customers increasingly recognizing space intelligence as a core pillar of national resilience and prioritizing sovereign ownership of the capability. The resulting momentum is compelling: ICEYE has sold sovereign solutions to seven European customers with a contracted backlog of over €1.5B. Driven by customer pull, ICEYE is also rapidly expanding its product portfolio with several new modalities in R&D.

A stellar team

Lastly, and most importantly, our conviction starts and ends with the team. We have had the privilege of knowing founders Rafal and Pekka for nearly a decade and have seen the ICEYE team execute steadily on one of the hardest engineering challenges of our time. They do so with a high-trust and values-driven culture of excellence, innovation, and velocity. We look forward to partnering with them, and are excited for the impact they will have in the years to come. Watch this space.
