Rep. Luna Introduces Protect Our Farmers and Families Act of 2025 to Ban Toxic Pesticide Diquat

WASHINGTON, D.C. - On Monday, Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna (FL-13) introduced the Protect Our Farmers and Families Act of 2025, legislation that cancels the registration and prohibits all uses of the toxic pesticide diquat in the United States.

Diquat, a chemical long associated with harmful effects on both the environment and human health, has been banned or heavily restricted in numerous countries due to safety concerns. Rep. Luna's bill directs the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to cancel diquat's registration, revoke all related tolerances on food products, and prohibit its sale, use, and potential re-registration moving forward.

"Florida's farmers and families deserve protection from harmful chemicals that threaten our food supply, water, and health," said Rep. Luna. "Diquat has been linked to dangerous side effects and poses unreasonable risks to the environment. By banning this pesticide once and for all, we're standing up for public health, supporting safe agriculture, and ensuring that our families and communities are no longer exposed to this toxic substance."

Under the legislation:

• All current uses of diquat will be deemed unsafe and canceled under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).

• The EPA will revoke any existing food residue tolerances associated with diquat.

• Sale, distribution, and use of existing stocks will be immediately prohibited.

• The EPA will be barred from re-registering diquat for any future use.

This action aligns the United States with the global scientific consensus on the dangers of diquat and prioritizes the long-term health of both farmers and consumers.

"America's agricultural strength depends on safe practices that protect our farmers while producing the best food in the world," Rep. Luna added. "This bill makes sure we are protecting people first-not chemical companies."
