Did NextEra’s Dividends Make Up For Its Stock’s Lag Behind The Market

NextEra Energy (NEE) sells electricity primarily through its Florida utility and pays a dividend yielding 3.0% at the October 15, 2026 close. Investors holding the stock are likely doing so for that regular cash payout. The company's share price has lagged the broader market over the past five years. So, once every dividend is counted, what would you guess a holder ended up with over five years, next to the market?

How Far Has NextEra Stock Trailed The Market?

NextEra shares declined 2.4% over the five years to October 15, 2026. The S&P 500 climbed 75.9% on price alone during that same period. This performance gap leaves NextEra 78.3 percentage points behind the broader index. An investor looking strictly at price action held a stagnant asset for five years while the rest of the market advanced.

When NextEra Energy is a large share of what you own, its price matters as much as its dividend checks. See how to protect a concentrated position.

How Much Did NextEra's Dividends Add?

Reinvesting those dividends shifts the math and pushes NextEra to an 11.6% return over the same five years. The payouts added 14.0 percentage points, transforming a slight price decline into a net gain. A shareholder ultimately derived their entire return, and a little more, from those distributions.

Did The Dividends Close The Gap For NextEra Holders?

A direct comparison requires counting dividends on both sides, since the companies in the S&P 500 also make cash payouts.

Return from Oct 7, 2021 to Oct 15, 2026 On price alone With dividends reinvested
The stock -2.4% +11.6%
S&P 500 +75.9% +87.6%

Before taxes and costs. The S&P 500 is measured through the SPDR S&P 500 ETF.

The S&P 500 returned 87.6% once dividends are factored in, meaning NextEra holders still trail the market by 76.0 percentage points. NextEra payouts provided a larger boost than the broader market's dividend, which added 11.7 points over the five years. Yet the extra cash barely narrowed the shortfall, because the broader market also paid dividends.

What This Means If You Own NextEra For Income

NextEra dividends contributed 2.7 percentage points to its return over the past year, while the S&P 500 added about 1 point from its payouts. The extra cash provides a tangible benefit to shareholders. Over a five-year timeline, however, the income only cut the stock's lag behind the market from 78.3 to 76.0 percentage points.

Electricity sales supply the cash NextEra pays out to investors. During fiscal 2025, Florida Power & Light Company accounted for 66.6% of revenue, and NextEra Energy Resources provided most of the rest. The company outlined its payout outlook on its fiscal Q2 2026 call on July 24, 2026. Management said it expects to grow dividends per share roughly 10% per year through 2026, and 6% per year from year-end 2026 through 2028. Investors should note these figures are forecasts, not results.

Anyone holding the stock for income must look beyond the dividend on its own. The crucial metric to watch over each year of ownership is NextEra's return with dividends measured against the S&P 500's return with dividends.

Is Too Much Of Your Wealth Riding On One Stock?

For NextEra Energy holders, the dividend checks tell a different story from the price chart. When one position grows into a large part of your wealth, a sharp fall can hurt your whole plan, and selling to spread the money out can bring a large tax bill.
