Construction continues on the Herring Avenue Bridge over the Brazos River. Starting Tuesday, May 26, the westbound side of the bridge from
N. Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd. to N. University Parks Drive will be closed for about one month depending on weather and construction activities.
How to use this map: Click the colored routes on the map for more information on each specific detour.
Once the westbound side is completed, the closure will shift to the eastbound side.
The Herring Avenue Bridge Project includes bridge rail and pedestrian walkway improvements, bridge joint replacements, vegetation removal, minor concrete repairs, a polymer concrete overlay, and replacement of outdated or damaged guardrails. The project is anticipated to be complete in fall 2026.
Bridges require periodic maintenance and repair to mitigate degradation and extend their useful life. The City of Waco has identified repairs that are still manageable from a cost standpoint, so we are completing them now before they worsen and become more expensive.
Please adhere to all posted signage near the bridge, which will be placed in advance to warn of upcoming work. Message boards will also be posted ahead of any half-bridge closure to notify drivers and direct traffic to established detours.
We urge all residents to drive carefully through the construction zones. We sincerely thank you for your patience and cooperation as we work to ensure the long-term safety and reliability of the Herring Avenue Bridge.
