People Mover unveils new bus stop artwork, amenities and signage in Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - People Mover unveiled new public art and informational signage at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday, Sept. 23, marking the first public display of artwork created through the agency's Locally Rooted Art Initiative.

Anchorage Mayor Suzanne LaFrance joined Anchorage artist and science illustrator Julia Ditto and People Mover representatives for the ceremony at the People Mover bus stop near Muldoon Road and Northern Lights Boulevard.

The Locally Rooted Art Initiative invited artists with roots or ongoing connections to Anchorage to propose original artwork for bus stop signs across the Municipality.

Ditto's design will eventually appear on approximately 680 bus stop signs throughout Anchorage. Her artwork highlights the natural habitats found throughout the Anchorage area, from the Chugach Mountains to Turnagain Arm. The design presents these environments as colorful layers featuring plants and animals found across the region, reflecting the landscapes that surround and shape the Anchorage community.

"Just as the bus system moves riders through town, my design illustrates what it feels like to travel through Anchorage's habitats. When people look at my design, I want them to consider the land they are crossing, the history of its people and the value it still holds today," Ditto said.

People Mover also unveiled new informational signs that will be installed below the artwork and replace paper schedules currently found at bus stops. The updated signs build on informational signage piloted along Route 25 since October 2024 and are designed to provide riders with clear, consistent information throughout the system.

"Small details in our infrastructure make a big difference in how a community feels," said Mayor LaFrance. "Bringing original public art to hundreds of bus stops across Anchorage is a wonderful celebration of our community's spirit and natural beauty."

The event also highlighted new bus stop amenities being installed across Anchorage. The bus stop at Muldoon and Northern Lights features a new shelter, bench and trash can, representing the latest amenity designs being introduced. Dozens of stops received improvements this summer, with additional upgrades planned during the 2027 and 2028 summer construction seasons.

"Bus stops are where every People Mover trip begins and ends, so the experience riders have at these spaces matters," said Bart Rudolph, director of the Municipality of Anchorage Public Transportation Department. "These improvements bring together useful information, more comfortable amenities and artwork that reflects the place we call home. Together, they help create bus stops that are more welcoming and recognizable throughout Anchorage."
