Today, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced sweeping new actions to uphold New York City's sanctuary city laws and protect immigrant New Yorkers. Mayor Mamdani signed a comprehensive executive order to reaffirm the city's commitment to being a sanctuary for all New Yorkers and also launched a citywide "Know Your Rights" push, distributing nearly 32,000 flyers and booklets in 10 languages. In response, Lisa Rivera, President and CEO of New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) issued the following statement:
"New York Legal Assistance Group applauds Mayor Mamdani for reaffirming New York City's commitment to uphold sanctuary laws and protect our immigrant neighbors with today's executive order.
"New York is a city of immigrants; as New Yorkers we recognize that none of us are safe unless we ensure all of us are safe. Our rights mean nothing unless our institutions, leaders and communities are united in the fight to ensure that the rights of every New Yorker, regardless of immigration status, are protected and upheld.
"Over the last year we have seen how abusive immigration enforcement, federal overreach and a breakdown in due process in immigration courts have sown fear, division and barriers to justice across immigrant communities in New York City and beyond. Today's actions by the Mamdani administration mark important steps toward bolstering critical legal protections for our communities and making our city a safer, more just home for all New Yorkers.
"In this critical moment, our local and state governments must boldly step up to combat the federal government's violent campaign of unjust policies and abusive practices targeting our immigrant neighbors and U.S. citizens alike. A patchwork of legal protections that are bound by geography or municipal boundaries is simply not enough.
"To ensure that the safety and civil rights of all New Yorkers continue to be protected throughout the five boroughs and beyond, we urge the New York State Legislature and Gov. Hochul to pass the New York for All Act."
