As Independence Day approaches, the City of Marion reminds residents to be aware of the rules surrounding the purchase and use of consumer-grade fireworks within city limits.
Under Iowa law, cities are required to allow for the sale of fireworks. State law also establishes the dates and times when consumer fireworks may be used. In Marion, consumer fireworks are permitted only during the following dates/times:
Fireworks may be purchased and used only by individuals 18 years of age or older. Fireworks may be discharged only on property owned by the user or with permission from the property owner. Fireworks should not be discharged in a way that causes sparks, debris or other materials to land on neighboring properties.
Fireworks may NOT be used in public parks or on any public property. Other dates, times and locations are authorized by permit only.
City code classifies the discharge of fireworks outside the approved dates and times as a nuisance violation. Property owners who allow fireworks to be discharged on their property outside the authorized periods may be cited for a municipal infraction.
The fees for a municipal infraction are $750 for the first offense and $1,000 for each subsequent infraction.
Residents are encouraged to be considerate of their neighbors and to follow all applicable rules. Fireworks activity occurring outside the authorized dates and times may be reported to the Marion Police Department's non-emergency line at 319-377-1511.
