Philadelphia man sentenced to 10 years and one day in prison for armed robbery and shooting at city convenience store (DOJ)

PHILADELPHIA - United States Attorney David Metcalf announced that Larry Dempsey, 53, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was sentenced today to 120 months and one day in prison, to be followed by supervised release, and $7,600 in restitution by United States District Judge John F. Murphy for committing an armed robbery and shooting at a city convenience store in October of 2024.

The defendant was charged by indictment in June 2025. In June of this year, he pleaded guilty to robbery which interferes with interstate commerce (Hobbs Act robbery) and using, carrying, and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.

As detailed in court filings and admitted to by the defendant, on October 6, 2024, Dempsey entered a convenience store on the 2600 block of North 27th Street, armed with a firearm, and chased the store clerk out of the store at gunpoint. The defendant took money out of the register, and discharged his firearm twice, causing damage to the store.

This case was investigated by the Philadelphia Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Catherine S. Dos Santos and Special Assistant United States Attorney Meagan Gordon.
