Stronger median barrier, crash cushions and improved drainage enhances safety
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (Oct. 2, 2025) - The Utah Department of Transportation today announced the completion of a safety repair project on U.S. Route 189 in Provo Canyon.
The work between Canyon Glen Park and Vivian Park included replacing the median barrier with a stronger concrete design, upgrading crash cushions and improving drainage systems. To complete the project safely, crews temporarily reduced lanes in the area throughout the summer.
The updated crash cushions, located at the ends of the barrier, provide a valuable safety improvement. Made of flexible, energy-absorbing materials, the cushions act like an accordion when struck. They compact immediately on impact to slow the vehicle and reduce the severity of injuries. Crash cushions are also cost-effective and can often be reused after a crash.
"Safety comes first and we're always looking for practical solutions to apply to our roads, especially in the canyons," UDOT Region Three Project Manager Craig Hancock said. "Crash cushions are a great way to protect everyone on the road while also being considerate of taxpayer dollars."
Crews also cleaned out and reinforced drainage systems along US-189 to prepare canyon drivers for the upcoming season of ice, snow and water.
