As the aviation element of the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM), 427 Special Operations Aviation Squadron (427 SOAS) provides agile, rapidly deployable special operations aviation capabilities in support of domestic and international crisis response. The unit offers CAF members and federal public service employees the opportunity to serve in a highly specialized, mission-focused environment where teamwork, adaptability, and operational excellence are paramount.

Career opportunities

427 SOAS offers a range of unique and challenging career paths, with primary opportunities for Special Operations Aviation (SOA) aircrew and aviation support personnel, both streams contributing directly to the squadron's operational success.

Special Operations Aviation Aircrew

SOA aircrew-including pilots, flight engineers, door gunners, and airborne electronic sensor operators-deliver precision aviation effects in complex and high-risk environments. They receive world-class training that develops advanced skills to support high-readiness tactical operations while accounting for the wide range of contingencies faced in special operations aviation.

SOA pilots may be selected to operate either fixed- or rotary-wing aircraft in support of missions and task forces around the world, conducting demanding flying profiles during high-risk operations.

Flight Engineers provide in-flight situational awareness, maintenance support, mission kit installation, tactical insertion and extraction safety, and operation of onboard sensors and aerial weapons systems.

Door gunners contribute to force protection, situational awareness, and mission execution during demanding operational profiles.

Airborne electronic sensor operators employed on the CE-145C Vigilance operate a wide array of sensors and intelligence-collection capabilities, connecting operators to the objective and beyond in various mission scenarios.

All SOA aircrew roles require strong technical proficiency, sound judgment, teamwork, and the ability to maintain performance during high-tempo operations. Serving as aircrew within 427 SOAS is a career choice, which requires exceptional professionalism, adaptability, and a commitment to excellence.

Special Operations Aviation Support

SOA support personnel-including aviation maintenance technicians, logisticians, intelligence specialists, land equipment maintenance personnel, and signals technicians-ensure aircraft, ground equipment, and personnel remain mission ready. Operating under near-immediate timelines and high-readiness conditions, they play a critical role in preparing aviation assets to deploy on extremely short notice.
