Rhia Taonui's thoughts and reflections as the NGO Delegate at CSW70

Issue date 2 April 2026

What an incredible two weeks it's been for Rhia Taonui, who represented Aotearoa New Zealand as the NGO Delegate at CSW70, held at the United Nations Headquarters in New York!

For Rhia attending CSW as the NZ NGO Delegate was both a "privilege and a responsibility" with real pride in seeing Pacific and Global South voices being present in an international forum.

Hear Rhia's top highlights

  • The sessions were incredibly impactful and grounding, particularly those focused on access to justice, regional leadership, and discussions around technology-facilitated gender-based violence.
  • Being alongside other delegates both from Aotearoa and internationally. There was a strong sense of shared purpose, even across very different contexts.
  • Being present during the consideration of the Agreed Conclusions, and observing the deep resilience and determination of women from around the world who are committed to women's equality and pushing forward together.

Rhia's key takeaways from CSW70:

  1. We've moved from commitment to accountability - It's no longer just about what governments say, it's about whether systems are delivering for women and girls.
  2. Civil society is essential - NGOs play a critical role in advocacy and delivery, but the structures around engagement still need strengthening.
  3. Pacific and relational leadership matters - there is real strength in how we show up, grounded in culture, relationships, and collective responsibility. This is something we should continue to bring forward confidently in global spaces.

Overall, CSW70 reaffirmed that leadership in these spaces is not about being the loudest voice, but about holding space with integrity and respecting the vā, so people feel seen, heard, and connected.

"It was an honour to represent Aotearoa NGO in this way, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to contribute".
