WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Cory Booker, a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, along with Senators Tim Kaine (D-VA), Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Adam Schiff (D-CA), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), and Chris Murphy (D-CT)-who have been leading the charge in the Senate against the Trump-Vance Administration's war with Iran-applauded the Senate's passage of a War Powers Resolution to terminate the war. The resolution was first introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Representative Gregory Meeks (D-NY-05) and has now passed both chambers of Congress.
Booker has been at the forefront of the Senate's months-long effort to end the conflict. The Senate previously advanced its own resolution to force an end to the war with Iran, and that resolution remains pending in the Senate.
"For decades, presidents have marched us into war with no vote, no Congress, no consent. Trump, Hegseth, and Vance tried to outrun the Constitution to wage an illegal war in Iran. Today, after months of work, the Senate said no. The power of the people is greater than the people in power. We have much more work to do. Keep standing up," said Senator Booker.
"President Trump launched a war against Iran with no strategy, no endgame, no authorization from Congress, and no support from allies. The Senate and House, though controlled by the President's party, have now stood up to oppose any continuation of this illegal and foolish war. Americans are not interested in a war that has raised gas prices, killed Americans, and hurt the global economy," said Senator Kaine. "I'm grateful to my colleagues for standing up for the Constitution, and I call on the President to respect this decision and cease hostilities against Iran."
"Today, Congress stood up to Donald Trump and voted to end his costly, unnecessary, and devastating war with Iran. Let me be clear: for the first time, this resolution has passed both chambers of Congress and does not require the President's signature. The message from the only branch of government with the power to declare war is unmistakable: the Trump administration must withdraw U.S. forces from hostilities in Iran. The pressure on Republicans mounts. Trump promised 'maximum pressure' on Iran. What he delivered through this reckless war was maximum confusion, maximum chaos, and maximum cost to the American people. For more than 100 days, Congress - and the American people - have demanded transparency, answers, and an end to the fighting. Every second this war continues, the cost to the American people goes higher and higher," said Senator Schumer.
"From the beginning, the administration pursued this illegal war without making the case to Congress or the American people. In the months since, we've seen the region in chaos, shifting goalposts and rationales for the war, skyrocketing gas and grocery costs, and tragically, the lives of 13 servicemembers lost with thousands more put in harm's way. Now, the administration has capitulated with a complete giveaway to Iran that leaves our national security far worse than when the war began. The Pentagon is requesting billions more to cover the cost of a war that Americans never asked for and the President never had the authority to pursue. It was clear from the start that President Trump was promising far more than he could deliver, and Americans are bearing the costs of his reckless actions. Today's vote represents bipartisan and bicameral support of our efforts to end this war of choice once and for all. And it reaffirms Congress' constitutional role in bringing this conflict to an end and bringing our servicemembers safely back home," said Senator Schiff.
"I've been saying this from the start: this illegal war should've never happened," said Senator Duckworth. "It's become undeniable that the only thing Trump's war has led to is 14 servicemembers killed, a cratering economy, an emboldened Iran and a less safe America. Today's vote should've never taken this long-and it should've been unanimous. The will of the people is clear: Trump must end this disastrous war."
"The American people want lower costs, not another forever war in the Middle East, but President Trump has delivered the exact opposite with his war of choice with Iran. Today, my Republican colleagues finally joined us in sending that message to the White House: end this war once and for all. Americans have gotten nothing from it and instead, it has cost 13 American servicemembers their lives, cost American taxpayers tens of billions of dollars, and cost American families at the pump. Diplomacy was the answer from the start, and it's past time President Trump get serious about brokering a deal that ends the fighting, keeps costs down for Americans, and actually delivers a lasting peace and security for the region and the United States," said Senator Baldwin.
"Donald Trump unilaterally led our nation into the biggest military blunder in living memory," said Senator Murphy. "The cost has been 13 American servicemembers and thousands of innocent Iranian lives lost, crushing inflation, and a hardline Iranian regime now able to choke global commerce on a whim. This resolution should have passed months ago, but I'm glad to see the Senate finally do its job and demand some accountability for Trump's illegal war.
