The City of Tampa is proud to join the Historic Ybor Neighborhood Civic Association on Thursday, December 11th for a ribbon cutting celebrating a brand-new sidewalk in Ybor City, made possible thanks to a grant from AARP (American Association of Retired Persons).
Over the summer, AARP selected Tampa as one of just ten winners of a 2025 Community Challenge Grant to build nearly two blocks of sidewalk in Ybor City along E. 12th Avenue. With two prominent income-based senior living communities nearby, this new sidewalk connection will give residents a much safer, easier, and more comfortable way to get around the area. Trees and landscaping will also be added. The new sidewalk also ties directly to the Green Spine, a protected bike lane, that runs east-west through Tampa and north along N. 15th Street to Cuscaden Park, further increasing connectivity. It'll also connect to future FDOT improvements in the area and the Ybor campus of Hillsborough Community College.
The grant funding totaled $20,000 with the remaining project funds coming from the City of Tampa. Project design was completed in-house by the City's Vision Zero team.
"This project is another strong example of the City's Mobility Department working to bring in additional outside resources and support to strengthen Tampa's broader transportation network," said Brandon Campbell, Interim-Mobility Director for the City of Tampa. "Every new sidewalk, is more than just concrete, it's a pathway to accessibility, independence, and better quality of life for Tampa's residents."
