North Avenue improvements resume March 30

CHICAGO - The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that an improvement project on North Avenue (Illinois 64) from Interstate 294 (Tri-State Tollway) in Northlake to Harlem Avenue (Illinois 43) in River Forest, passing through Melrose Park, River Grove, Stone Park, and Elmwood Park, will resume, weather permitting, Monday, March 30.

The $17.6 million project is scheduled to be completed in several stages. Milling and resurfacing between First (Illinois 171) and Harlem avenues were completed last year. This year's work includes median and drainage improvements, ADA upgrades and resurfacing from First Avenue to I-294.

To complete the work, the public can expect various lane closures on North Avenue with lane shifts throughout the project limits. At least two lanes in each direction will remain open and access to residences and businesses will be maintained throughout construction.

The project is anticipated to be completed in November.

The public can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through this area. Alternate routes are encouraged. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits and be on the alert for workers and equipment.

Over the next six years, IDOT is planning to improve 7,107 lane miles of highway and 8.4 million square feet of bridge deck as part of Rebuild Illinois, which is investing $33.2 billion into all modes of transportation. Accomplishments through Year Six of Rebuild Illinois include almost $20.8 billion of improvements statewide to 21,309 lane miles of highway, 815 bridges and 1,181 additional safety improvements.
