Spruce students learn to design, code, and create

DALLAS - At H. Grady Spruce High School, amid the zeroes and ones of the Information Technology cluster, Ashley M. turned an ordinary class project into a practical business tool for her father.
"We learn about many things from graphic design to coding," she said. "It was my first time doing anything like that. The project was to create a website for a legitimate business and since my dad has one, I thought I might just help him out."
As a sophomore, Ashley takes Principles of Technology, Computer Maintenance and Digital Media. Next year, she will tackle Independent Technology Applications, a project-based course which allows students to create their own app.
"My dad has a hard time understanding online things and electronics, but he really loved my website and was in shock," she said. "He showed it to all of his friends and the rest of my family members because he was proud of me."
In digital media class, students also learn to correct and manipulate images using Photoshop. In the "Lost Family Activity," students restored damaged, faded photographs from the 1920s, carefully removing scratches and sharpening details to bring each image back to life. Other adventures in the class incorporate usage of AI to build unique action characters, demonstrating creativity.
Raul H., a JROTC cadet, enrolled in the class to improve his photo editing skills. Along the way, he learned HTML before transitioning to Google Sites. The technical skills he is learning now will help him build a digital portfolio.
"I learned how to manipulate images, combine faces together, and remove backgrounds," Raul said. "Everything I like, or want people to see on my photography page, I put on the website I built using Google Sites," he said.
Advancing each year, students like Ashley and Raul will earn several certifications including Google IT Support through Coursera, which transfers to college, and Microsoft 365.
"This cluster has definitely opened my eyes to see that I have other options. Technology will always be with us. It's one of those things where it's a reliable experience to have. You could get a job basically anywhere," Ashley said.

DALLAS - En H. Grady Spruce High School, en la especialización de informática, Ashley M. hizo de un proyecto de clase una herramienta práctica para el negocio de su padre.
"Aprendemos sobre muchas cosas como diseño gráfico y codificación", dijo. "Fue mi primera vez haciendo algo así. El proyecto era crear un sitio web para un negocio de verdad y, viendo que mi papá tiene uno, me propuse echarle una mano".
Como estudiante de 10.º grado, Ashley toma Principios de Tecnología, Mantenimiento de Computadoras y Medios Digitales. El próximo año, tomará Aplicaciones Tecnológicas Independientes, un curso basado en proyectos en que los estudiantes crean su propia app.
"A mi papá le cuesta entender cosas en línea y lo electrónico, pero le encantó mi sitio web y se sorprendió mucho", dijo. "Se lo enseñó a todos sus amigos y al resto de mi familia porque estaba orgulloso de mí".
En la clase de medios digitales, los estudiantes también aprenden a corregir y manipular imágenes usando Photoshop. En la actividad de la "familia perdida", los estudiantes restauraron fotografías dañadas o descoloridas de la década de 1920, quitando cuidadosamente rayones y aclarando detalles para darle nueva vida a cada imagen. Otras aventuras en clase incorporan el uso de la IA para diseñar personajes de acción únicos, demostrando así la creatividad de los estudiantes.
Raúl H., cadete de JROTC, se inscribió en la clase para mejorar sus habilidades de edición de imágenes. A lo largo del camino, aprendió HTML antes de empezar a usar Google Sites. Los conocimientos técnicos que está adquiriendo hoy lo ayudarán a preparar un catálogo digital de sus obras.
"Aprendí a manipular imágenes, combinar caras y quitar el fondo de las imágenes", dijo Raúl. "Todo lo que me gusta, o que quiero que la gente pueda ver en mi página de fotografías, lo pongo en el sitio web que construí usando Google Sites".
Al avanzar cada año, los estudiantes como Ashley y Raúl obtendrán varias certificaciones, incluyendo Google IT Support de Coursera, el cual es transferible a la universidad, y Microsoft 365.
"Esta especialización me ha abierto los ojos para ver que tengo otras opciones. La tecnología siempre estará con nosotros. Es una experiencia que tiene valor en muchos lugares. Podría conseguir un trabajo en cualquier lugar básicamente", dijo Ashley.
