On 23 September, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania hosted the fifth political consultations between Lithuania and Thailand. The discussions focused on key topics of bilateral cooperation, including strengthening ties between Lithuania and Thailand, the EU-Thailand agenda, cooperation between Lithuania and ASEAN, academic and cultural exchanges, development of trade and economic relations, consular issues, as well as security challenges facing Europe and Southeast Asia.
The Lithuanian delegation was led by Ričardas Šlepavičius, Head of the Directorate for Indo-Pacific at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Krongkanit Rakcharoen, Director-General of the Department of European Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand.
When speaking about support for Ukraine, Šlepavičius stressed the importance of the assistance of all international partners, including Thailand, in ensuring that EU sanctions against Russia were fully implemented.
Both sides expressed a shared intention to strengthen economic cooperation and develop cultural and scientific relations. Particular attention was paid to the areas of digital economy, cybersecurity, life sciences, and space technologies.
In 2024, bilateral trade between Lithuania and Thailand amounted to €53 million, with Thai investments in Lithuania exceeding €58.5 million.
Lithuania and Thailand established diplomatic relations in 1993. The fourth round of political consultations took place in Bangkok in 2024.
Suphanvasa Chotikajan Tang, Ambassador of Thailand to Lithuania, resides in Copenhagen, while Darius Gaidys, Ambassador of Lithuania to Thailand, resides in Singapore.
