HONOLULU, Aug. 21, 2026, 10 a.m. - Except for customers in remote and severely damaged areas, Hawaiian Electric expects nearly all impacted customers to be restored on Hawaii Island by today. As of 8:30 a.m., more restorations were made on Hawaii Island with about 83% of impacted customers back online. Currently, about 11,290 without power.

Today, through Hawaiian Electric's partnership in the Western Region Mutual Assistance Group, utility workers from Southern California Edison are providing additional manpower to our employees and contractors on Hawaii Island who have been working around the clock to repair equipment and restore power ahead of the new potential storm system approaching the state. SCE personnel will work under the direction of Hawaiian Electric's Hawaii Island crews to support the restoration efforts in some of hardest hit areas that saw severe flash flooding and extreme winds.

While power has been restored to essentially all customers impacted by Tropical Storm Lala on Oahu and Maui, crews continue to work on restoring remaining small pocket outages and individual service lines on these islands. For latest updates, go to Oahu / Maui Couty Outage Maps.

Misinformation about filing claims

There is a lot of misinformation circulating about filing a claim after a power outage. Under Tariff Rule No. 16, approved by the State of Hawaii Public Utilities Commission, Hawaiian Electric is not liable for losses "caused by accident, storm, fire, strikes, riots, war, public safety power shutoff or any cause not within the company's control through the exercise of reasonable diligence and care." The losses that are not covered include, but are not limited to, food spoilage and medication that requires refrigeration, etc. More information about filing damage claims can be found on the company's website.
