NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. - A 27-year-old man is charged with sexually assaulting a woman after she left a North Hollywood gym on July 19. Investigators believe there are more victims.
"The defendant violently attacked a vulnerable individual. The damage extends beyond any physical injuries, it follows victims throughout their lives," Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman said. "No one should have to live in fear when going about their day because a coward is lurking in the shadows and preying on others. Our office stands committed to holding the defendant accountable and standing with the victim every step of the way. If you believe you are a victim of this defendant, please contact law enforcement so we can hold the offender responsible."
Rodrigo Melgar (dob 3/13/99) of Woodland Hills is charged in case 26VWCF01453 with one felony count of sexual penetration by use of force.
Melgar pled not guilty at arraignment on Aug. 5. The Court set bail at $100,000. A preliminary hearing setting is scheduled Aug. 17 in Department 105 at the Van Nuys Courthouse.
On July 19, at approximately 8:20 p.m., Melgar allegedly began to follow the victim when she left a North Hollywood gym. He allegedly sexually assaulted the victim before a witness intervened. Melgar fled the scene.
The Los Angeles Police Department North Hollywood Division identified and arrested Melgar on Aug. 3.
If convicted as charged, Melgar faces a maximum sentence of eight years in state prison.
