Is Quanta Stock’s Winning Streak Skill Or Luck

A five-year run of beating the S&P 500 looks like the mark of an exceptional business. Quanta Services (PWR) has accomplished exactly that. So, of about 480 large U.S. stocks, how many do you think managed the same streak?

How Rare Is Quanta's Winning Streak?

Measured before dividends, Quanta shares outpaced the index across five consecutive twelve-month stretches since October 2021.

Period The stock S&P 500
Oct 6, 2021 to Oct 6, 2022 +18.4% -14.2%
Oct 6, 2022 to Oct 9, 2023 +31.5% +15.8%
Oct 9, 2023 to Oct 9, 2024 +76.9% +33.6%
Oct 9, 2024 to Oct 13, 2025 +40.1% +14.9%
Oct 13, 2025 to Oct 14, 2026 +53.3% +16.0%

Price changes over periods of 252 trading sessions each, dividends excluded.

Only 9 of the 484 stocks measured beat the index in all five years. Outperforming the market for even one year is difficult: in the twelve months to October 2026, only 37% of the group managed to do so. Trailing the index is the standard result for an individual stock, making five wins in a row a rare outcome.

Could A Streak Like This Be Luck?

A large sample size will produce long winning streaks by chance alone, even if no company fundamentally outperforms the rest. During a typical year in this sequence, about four in ten of these stocks beat the index.

Imagine outperformance was entirely random. If you put all 484 names in a hat each year and drew four in ten as winners, repeating the process five years in a row would yield about six companies with a perfect record. Those six names would boast a five-year winning streak without any actual skill involved.

The data shows 9 companies with such a streak, or about one and a half times as many as luck alone would provide. That gap is too small to prove skill on its own. A share price alone cannot reveal which factor is responsible.

Did Quanta's Profit Grow Through The Streak?

The Electric segment generated most of Quanta's fiscal 2025 revenue, with the rest coming from Underground and Infrastructure. For the company as a whole, twelve-month profit, which includes one-time items, rose in four of the five years of the streak. Over the whole streak, profit rose 141%. The share price climbed significantly faster, gaining 491%.

Profit fell in just one year, the first period ending October 2022. It dropped 21%, yet the stock still beat the index. Ultimately, Quanta increased its profit during most years of the streak.

What To Watch Instead Of The Streak

Quanta posted a 41% revenue increase from a year earlier in the April to June 2026 quarter. Management raised its 2026 expectations across the board in a July 30 release. The winning streak simply records historical share price movements, while profit measures the actual financial output of the business.

The central figure to watch is Quanta's profit growth in its next report, expected on or around October 29, 2026.

Now you know PWR better. And that's our purpose: to make you informed before you invest your money. However, making a bet on a single stock carries its own risks.

There is a smarter choice. Since its inception, the Trefis High Quality (HQ) Portfolio has beaten the benchmark that combines the three major indices - the S&P 500, S&P Mid-cap, and Russell 2000. And it did so without taking the concentrated risk that comes with do-it-yourself stock picking.
