NEW YORK - Today, the New York Legal Assistance Group (NYLAG) unveiled a new video resource, available in Spanish and English, that provides important family emergency preparedness and safety planning information for immigrant parents and families facing heightened risk of family separation amid increased immigration enforcement actions nationwide.
The Standby Guardianship Project, provides free legal assistance to immigrant parents who face risk of potential detention or deportation to empower families to protect what matters most: their children. Through its LegalHealth unit, NYLAG hosts free monthly pro bono legal clinics held at law firms and community-based locations across New York City. Free one-on-one appointments are also available by request via the confidential hotline at 212-659-6188. At these clinics or over the phone, NYLAG attorneys and pro bono legal partners can help parents complete emergency planning documents that help ensure someone they trust can care for their children if parents become unable to due to detention or deportation. Attorneys can also help families complete important planning documents that allow parents to choose a trusted adult to make decisions about their child's education, health care, travel and daily needs.
ENGLISH-LANGUAGE VIDEO TRANSCRIPT
Are you worried about being separated from your children because of your immigration status? Here are four important documents you can prepare before an emergency.
One: Standby Guardianship. Parents and caregivers can designate a trusted person to care for their children in the event of an emergency or separation. This prevents the risk of foster care exposure and ensures your child is cared for.
Two: Designation of Person in Parental Relations. With this document, the guardian can pick up your child from school, take them to doctors' appointments, and make health and education decisions on your behalf.
Three: Travel and Reunification Planning. Prepare consent letters that allow children to travel with the guardian when needed.
Four: Financial Preparedness. Complete a Power of Attorney that enables the guardian to manage housing, public benefits, and financial matters so care can continue smoothly.
At NYLAG, we have a Standby Guardianship clinic to help your family complete these documents and make informed decisions about your children's care.
To learn more or schedule an appointment, call our confidential hotline at 212-659-6188.
