BGE, Delmarva Power and Pepco Call for More Energy Supply to Protect Customers and Strengthen Regional Reliability

At least four PJM grid-alert events since May spanning spring, summer and fall, underscore the need for practical solutions to help customer costs

WASHINGTON, D.C. (October 14, 2026) - BGE, Delmarva Power and Pepco call for coordinated action to bring more electricity supply online after PJM Interconnection extended a Maximum Generation Alert and Load Management Alert through today. It is at least the fourth such alert event this year, with grid concerns emerging in May, July, September and October making clear that tight system conditions are becoming a year-round issue, not just a peak-summer challenge. The regional grid operator said unusually warm fall weather, strong electricity demand and planned generation and equipment maintenance outages are creating tight system conditions across the region.

While the current alert does not require broad action from customers, this pattern is a clear reminder that the region needs more dependable energy resources throughout the year to serve growing demand, reduce the risk of future power shortages and help bring supply prices under control. BGE, Delmarva Power and Pepco are prepared to be part of that solution by supporting reforms that allow regulated utilities to help develop new generation and energy storage under public oversight.

"Customers deserve an energy system that is reliable and works to keep costs under control," said Valencia McClure, senior vice president of Governmental, Regulatory and External Affairs at Exelon for BGE, Delmarva Power and Pepco. "This week's regional grid conditions show why we need an all-hands-on-deck approach to adding supply. Utilities can help move projects forward responsibly, with strong regulatory oversight and clear protections for customers."

On October 13, 2026, PJM called on participating demand-response resources, including customers enrolled in Delmarva Power and Pepco's Energy Wise Rewards program, to temporarily reduce electricity use and support regional grid reliability. Those events ended Tuesday evening, but PJM's alert procedures remain in effect through today as the grid operator monitors conditions. BGE, Delmarva Power and Pepco continue to coordinate with PJM and regulators and are prepared to act if additional support is needed.

Families and businesses across Maryland and the District of Columbia have seen regional electricity supply costs rise since 2024. For the average BGE residential customer, the bill increase from higher PJM supply costs is about $30 from 2024 to 2026, based on the typical usage of 851 kWh per month. Delmarva Power customers in Maryland are seeing a similar increase: based on typical residential usage of 1,004 kWh per month, customers in 2026 are paying approximately $13 more per month in Standard Offer Service supply costs than they did in 2024. For a typical Pepco residential customer, the impact is about $30 more per month in the District and about $17 more per month in Maryland in 2026 compared with 2024, based on average monthly electricity use of 614 kWh in the District and 778 kWh in Maryland. BGE, Delmarva Power and Pepco do not generate electricity today or control PJM supply prices, which are passed through to customers on their energy bill. Through The Exelon Promise, BGE, Delmarva Power and Pepco are pairing immediate customer support with long-term solutions to add energy supply, strengthen reliability and help keep costs under control. The companies support an all-of-the-above approach that can include utility-supported generation, battery storage, distributed energy resources, faster interconnection of new projects and market reforms that reward resources for being available when the grid is under stress. Together, these actions can ease pressure on energy costs while helping ensure customers have dependable service when they need it most.
