WASHINGTON, D.C.-Today, Congressman Pat Harrigan (NC-10) voted in favor of H.R. 5103, the Make the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful Act of 2026, legislation to restore order, improve public safety, and protect the nation's capital from vandalism and crime.
"Washington, D.C. is the front door of our country, and right now it is not living up to that standard," said Congressman Harrigan."People travel here from all over the country and the world, and they should be able to walk our streets, visit our monuments, and feel a sense of pride in this place. Instead, we have allowed disorder, vandalism, and weak enforcement to take hold. That is not acceptable. This bill is about restoring basic standards, backing up our law enforcement, and making sure our nation's capital reflects the strength and character of the American people."
The Make the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful Act codifies President Trump's executive action to clean up graffiti, repair defaced monuments, and restore public spaces, while establishing a multi-agency federal commission to coordinate enforcement and improve safety across the District. The legislation also addresses ongoing public safety failures by pushing back on sanctuary-style policies and ensuring a stronger law enforcement presence.
Congressman Harrigan emphasized that House Republicans are taking action to clean up the nation's capital and urged the Senate to pass the legislation to ensure Washington, D.C. reflects the strength, order, and values of the American people.
