SCHUMER APPLAUDS WORLD’S FIRST SUB-1NM CHIP TECHNOLOGY ACHIEVED BY IBM AT ALBANY NANOTECH

Schumer Has Delivered Billions From CHIPS & Science Law, Which Senator Wrote And Passed Into Law, To Boost Chip R&D And Manufacturing Across New York, Including At Albany NanoTech, GlobalFoundries, And Micron

Schumer: World's Smallest Chip Achieved In Upstate NY… Again!

After delivering billions in funding from his CHIPS & Science law to boost chip R&D and manufacturing across Upstate NY, including at Albany NanoTech, U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer today applauded IBM's announcement that it has achieved the world's first sub-1-nanometer semiconductor technology at Albany NanoTech. With this milestone, IBM has improved upon its own record for the world's smallest chip for the third time. Previously, IBM's research and development at Albany Nano produced the world's first 7-nanometer chip, then the first 2-nanometer chip, and now the first .7 nanometer chip.

Schumer has worked for years to deliver federal funding from his CHIPS & Science Law to Upstate New York and highlight Albany NanoTech and the Capital Region's ability to lead the country's semiconductor and broader technology research and development efforts.

"The world's first sub-1-nanometer semiconductor has the potential to bring us to the next frontier of chipmaking. I'm thrilled that IBM has pioneered this technology in the Capital Region, showing the world that Albany NanoTech is the place to lead the nation and world's semiconductor research," said Senator Schumer. "I've long said the scientific and engineering breakthroughs in chipmaking that we cannot even fathom today will happen at Albany NanoTech. IBM is proving me right once again, defeating its own record for the world's smallest chip for the third time. It just goes to show: good things come in small packages. This is exactly the kind of groundbreaking discovery I had in mind when I wrote and led the passage of the CHIPS & Science Law. I will continue fighting for more investments for Albany NanoTech to strengthen our economy and lead America's next era of chip research and manufacturing."

Thanks to Schumer's advocacy, Albany NanoTech will soon be home to a major new IBM multi-billion-dollar quantum wafer fab, made possible by $1 billion in federal CHIPS R&D funding. Albany NanoTech will also feature a new $10 billion High NA EUV Lithography Center, made possible with a $1 billion investment from Governor Hochul and New York State, a project that hit a critical milestone earlier this spring with the beginning of the installation of Tokyo Electron's leading-edge 300mm wafer coater/developer system.

Albany NanoTech's world-renowned capabilities were also central to Schumer and Governor Hochul's successful effort to secure Micron's massive $100+ billion megafab project in Upstate NY, with Micron saying Albany NanoTech was a critical factor in their selection of Central NY for their major investment to bring advanced memory chip manufacturing to the U.S.

Thanks to Schumer's efforts and new investments spurred by his CHIPS & Science Law, Upstate NY has become a central hub for America's semiconductor research and manufacturing. In addition to more than $1.5 billion in CHIPS funding for GlobalFoundries to construct a second, state-of-the-art fab and create a first-of-its-kind advanced chip packaging facility, GlobalFoundries was also recently awarded $375 million in CHIPS R&D funding to launch Quantum Technology Solutions, a new quantum business within GlobalFoundries that will position America at the forefront of technology innovation. Micron has also broken ground and is far along on site preparation to begin building the first facility of the company's historic $100+ billion investment to build a cutting-edge memory fab complex in Central New York with the support of over $6 billion in federal CHIPS funding and billions more from the federal CHIPS investment tax credit. Corning Incorporated has finalized a $32 million agreement to make a $315 million investment that would increase production at its Canton facility of specialized glass vital for the semiconductor industry. Edwards Vacuum is nearing completion of a new first-of-its-kind-in-the-country $300+ million dry pump manufacturing facility, supported by an $18 million CHIPS funding award. TTM Technologies, a printed circuit board manufacturer, just cut the ribbon on a new facility in Onondaga County, creating 400 good-paying jobs, made possible by $30 million in federal investment that Schumer delivered. Menlo Micro will invest $150 million to build its microchip switch manufacturing facility in Tompkins County, creating over 100 new, good-paying jobs.
