BOWIE, Md. - Bowie State University has been recognized as one of U.S. Veterans Magazine's 2026 Top Veteran Schools, a national distinction honoring colleges and universities that provide exceptional support, resources and educational opportunities for veterans, service members and military-connected students. The achievement was announced in the publication's November 2026 Veterans Day issue, which celebrates institutions and organizations helping veterans succeed in higher education, the workforce and their communities.
"Our military-connected students bring exceptional leadership, resilience and real-world experience to the Bowie State community," said Dr. Aminta H. Breaux, president of Bowie State University. "Being named a 2026 Top Veteran School affirms the meaningful work taking place across our campus to ensure veterans, service members and their families have the tools and guidance needed to achieve their educational and professional goals. We are proud to help those who have served our country build successful futures through education."
The annual Top Veteran Schools recognition highlights institutions that help veterans and military-connected students achieve their educational goals through supportive campus environments, academic resources and programs tailored to their unique needs. According to U.S. Veterans Magazine, recognized schools demonstrate a strong commitment to helping military-affiliated students transition successfully from military service to higher education and civilian careers.
During the spring 2026 semester, Bowie State served 503 military-affiliated students, including 415 students utilizing GI Bill® benefits and 88 active-duty, Reserve and National Guard service members. Through its Military Resource Center and Office of Veteran Services, the university provides personalized guidance, academic support and military education benefit assistance, helping students translate their service experience into academic and professional achievement.
This month, the Military Resource Center will relocate to a newly renovated building on campus featuring a dedicated lounge, study space and gathering area designed for military-connected students. The enhanced facility reflects the university's ongoing efforts to create an environment where veterans, service members and their families can build community, access services and thrive.
The university also continues to strengthen partnerships with military installations, veteran-serving organizations and employers to expand access to internships, career opportunities and workforce development experiences. In addition, Bowie State has expanded its Green Zone program, training faculty and staff across campus to better understand and address the unique needs of military-affiliated students. Together, these initiatives help foster an inclusive campus culture for veterans and their families.
As a participant in the federal Yellow Ribbon Program, Bowie State University helps make higher education more accessible and affordable for eligible veterans and their families. Continued investments in specialized services, career preparation and military-focused resources reinforce the university's commitment to student success and long-term outcomes.
The recognition adds to a growing list of military-focused honors earned by Bowie State University. Earlier this year, the university was named a 2026-27 Military Friendly® School and Military Spouse Friendly School by VIQTORY, continuing designations it has held since 2019 and 2025, respectively. The distinctions recognize institutions that demonstrate a strong commitment to supporting veterans, active-duty service members and military families through student services, educational opportunities and career outcomes. U.S. Veterans Magazine also recognized Bowie State as a 2026 Top Yellow Ribbon School, highlighting the university's investment in veteran-centered services, academic support and career development opportunities.
