ABU AI Workshop at CCBN2026 Explores the Future of Media in the AI Era

Artificial intelligence is rapidly reshaping the media landscape, transforming how content is created, managed, distributed and governed. These developments were at the centre of the ABU AI Workshop at CCBN2026 in Beijing, held under the theme "How Do We Evolve in the Era of AI?"

Held on 23 April 2026 as part of the 2nd CCBN-ABU NEXUS Event, the workshop brought together around 120 participants, including broadcasters, regulators, technology companies, research institutions and international media representatives. Participants from across the Asia-Pacific and beyond explored the opportunities and challenges presented by AI in broadcasting.

Chaired by Dr. Veysel Binbay, Director of Technology at ABU, the session examined AI's growing role across the media value chain. Discussions highlighted how AI is enhancing production workflows, enabling new forms of storytelling, and improving operational efficiency, while also raising critical issues around content authenticity, copyright, governance and public trust.

Industry leaders and broadcasters shared practical applications of AI, ranging from automated production support and multilingual adaptation to audio processing and content personalisation. At the same time, speakers emphasised the continued importance of human editorial judgment, noting that AI should support, rather than replace, media professionals. The workshop also featured insights from leading AI companies and research institutions, showcasing advancements in generative media, large-model technologies and AI-driven production systems. These innovations are enabling faster content creation, more efficient workflows and new possibilities for creative expression.

As part of the broader CCBN-ABU NEXUS platform, the workshop provided ABU Members with valuable exposure to emerging technologies and industry practices. It also reinforced the importance of collaboration between broadcasters, technology providers and policymakers in navigating the next phase of media transformation.

ABU will continue to support its Members by facilitating knowledge exchange, strengthening capacity and fostering innovation in an increasingly AI-driven media environment.
