Houston OEM Announces Record Number of AlertHouston Registrations During 2026 Hurricane Season

HOUSTON, TX
- The City of Houston Office of Emergency Management (Houston OEM) is celebrating a major preparedness milestone: a record number of Houstonians registered for AlertHouston during the 2026 hurricane season, demonstrating the growing importance residents place on staying informed and prepared for emergencies.

Although the Houston area did not experience a major hurricane impact this season, the record number of new registrations underscores an important message: preparedness starts long before a storm threatens our community. It also reinforces Houston OEM's commitment to staying prepared all year round.

Beginning June 1, the start of hurricane season, AlertHouston registrations increased at a rate nearly four times the typical monthly average, highlighting the growing reach of Houston OEM's year-round preparedness outreach. In the month of September, signups were 420% above the normal monthly average. Houston OEM also saw an increase in registrations for the State of Texas Emergency Assistance Registry (STEAR), which helps emergency planners identify people who may need additional assistance during an emergency, including some older adults and people with disabilities.

"Preparedness is about taking action before an emergency happens, and we're encouraged to see more Houstonians taking that step by signing up for AlertHouston," said Brian Mason, director of the Houston Office of Emergency Management. "This milestone reflects the importance of our continued investment in community outreach and preparedness education. Every presentation, community event and conversation is an opportunity to help someone take action that could make a difference when it matters most. We're building a stronger culture of preparedness across Houston, and we encourage everyone to stay informed, make a plan and take steps today to protect themselves and their loved ones."

Disasters can happen at any time of the year. Houston OEM encourages all residents to take proactive steps to prepare, stay informed and connect with trusted emergency information resources. Be #READY365.
