Councilmember Application Period Now Open for District 5 Seat

At their regular meeting on Tuesday, October 28, the Novato City Council voted to begin the process of appointing a City Councilmember to fill the vacant District 5 seat, which includes Hamilton and parts of Southern Novato. The person appointed to fill the vacancy would serve on an interim basis until the City's next general municipal election, which will be held on November 3, 2026.

To be considered for the Novato City Council District 5 seat, those interested must:

  • Submit their application by Monday, November 24 at 12:30pm. Applications are available online at novato.org/elections or by contacting City Clerk Laura McDowall at [email protected] or 415.899.8986.
  • Be 18 years or older; and
  • Be a registered voter living within the boundaries of District 5. A district map is available at novato.org/elections.

Council will hold a special meeting to conduct interviews of eligible applicants. Interviews will be open to the public, and all application materials will be published with the City Council special meeting agenda at least 24 hours in advance of the meeting at novato.org/agendas. Pursuant to Government Code Section 36512, the City Council must appoint a councilmember to the District 5 seat by December 11, 2025.
