Amit Vashist, MD, SFHM, named to American Board of Internal Medicine Board of Directors

Philadelphia, July 1, 2026 - The American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) has appointed Amit Vashist, MD, SFHM, Senior Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer at Ballad Health, to the Board of Directors for a three-year term beginning July 1, 2026. The Board of Directors sets the strategy, policy and oversight of assessment across internal medicine and its subspecialties. Directors provide important insights into what constitutes excellence in patient care and help foster important partnerships in the healthcare community.

A dual board-certified internist and psychiatrist, Dr. Vashist provides executive leadership for clinical care delivery, quality and safety, clinical transformation, value-based care, process improvement and medical staff affairs across a 20-hospital integrated health system. He also oversees the Ballad Health Center for Clinical Transformation & Outcomes Optimization, provides administrative oversight of the Ballad Health Clinical Council and serves as Chief Clinical Advisor to Ballad Ventures.

Dr. Vashist is recognized nationally for advancing high reliability, clinical standardization, chronic disease management and enterprise-wide quality improvement. He has been recognized by Becker's Healthcare among its "Chief Medical Officers to Know" and "Physician Leaders to Know."

"The ABIM Board of Directors is intentionally designed to bring important voices from across the disciplines of internal medicine together to advance the mission of ABIM," said Furman S. McDonald, MD, MPH, President and CEO of ABIM and the ABIM Foundation. "The depth and breadth of Dr. Vashist's experience in medicine, leadership and rural health-among his many other strengths-will help us achieve our aspiration to be of the profession, and for the public."

ABIM is of the profession, and for the public®: nearly 6,000 physicians help advance ABIM's mission through involvement in governance, Item-Writing Task Forces, the Community Insights Network, standard-setting committees and other ad hoc committees. In addition, public members representing the voices of patients and patient advocates, caregivers and interprofessional healthcare team members serve on the Board of Directors, Council, Specialty Boards and Advisory Committees.

About the American Board of Internal Medicine

Since its founding in 1936, certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM) has stood for the highest standard in internal medicine and its 20 subspecialties. Nearly 300,000 physicians are certified by ABIM, representing more than a quarter of all doctors in the United States. Patients whose doctors demonstrate more medical knowledge and judgment through ABIM certification and Maintenance of Certification have better prognoses on a host of outcomes. Visit the ABIM Blog to learn more and follow ABIM on LinkedIn and Instagram. ABIM is a Member Board of the American Board of Medical Specialties.
