WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee released its draft Farm Bill, which does not include the harmful Save Our Bacon Act that would invalidate existing state and local farm animal welfare laws, putting billions of animals at risk - a substantial improvement upon the recently approved House Farm Bill that included this dangerous provision. In response, the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) issued the following statement:
"We applaud the Senate Agriculture Committee for introducing a Farm Bill without the Save Our Bacon Act. The vast majority of Americans want to end animal suffering and oppose attempts to undo popular, commonsense laws that protect animals, support independent farmers and make it easier for consumers to find more humane, healthy food," said Nancy Perry, senior vice president of Government Relations for the ASPCA. "The Save Our Bacon Act has no place in the Farm Bill, and we urge Congressional leaders to ensure this harmful language is kept out of the final bill."
The Senate's version of the Farm Bill is expected to be voted on by the Senate Agriculture Committee in the coming weeks. The ASPCA encourages members of the public to contact their U.S. senators to urge them to pass a more humane Farm Bill that protects animals, people, and the planet.
